A little after 6 p.m., police responded to a local mall where shots were fired. Upon arrival, officers found two male victims, a 17-year-old and a 19-year-old.
According to People, the 19-year-old died at the scene, whereas the 17-year-old was “was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead hours later.”
The motive to shoot is currently unknown, but, “based on the preliminary investigation detectives believe this shooting is an isolated incident and not the result of an active shooter,” police said in the release.
There is no suspect in custody, but the police have narrowed the description down to being a male in his 20’s.
“We do know that the mall does have a pretty robust surveillance footage so that’s going to be something that our homicide detectives are going to be definitely looking at,” Karl Chan, Sacramento police spokesman said when asked about a possible suspect. “We … are doing everything that we can to identify the suspect or suspects who are involved in this incident and make an arrest in this.”
He encourages anyone with information to come forward.
“We are deeply concerned by the increase in gun violence in Sacramento and other cities during the pandemic and have supported increasing our efforts to reach young people at risk,” Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg wrote on Twitter. “A gun is never the answer.”
