A Brisbane teenager has been charged with murder after two pedestrians were killed when struck by an allegedly stolen Landcruiser he was driving.
Police say the 17-year-old boy ran a red light and collided with a truck at an intersection in Alexandra Hills on Tuesday afternoon.
The 4WD then rolled and ploughed into the 31-year-old woman and 37-year-old man, who died at the scene on Finucane Drive.
The teen fled before later being arrested by police. He has now been charged with two counts of murder and a number of dangerous driving and burglary charges.
The 17-year-old will front Brisbane Children’s Court on Wednesday. Acting Chief Superintendent Chris Stream described the Australia Day crash as “absolutely horrible”.
“Our thoughts are with their friends and family, and in fact, even the local community where the accident occurred,” he told the Today Show.
“Something that we know was absolutely avoidable.”
The Toyota Landcruiser was allegedly stolen from a house in nearby Cleveland earlier on Tuesday.
