The late Hollywood director John Singleton Will was opened and revealed daughter will inherit his $3.8 million estate.
The Boyz n the Hood director tragically passed away at the age of 51 on Monday after his family shut off his life support machine after he suffered a debilitating stroke.
Singleton’s last will and testament was filed by his mother Shelia Waard and it leaves his estate to his eldest child 26-year-old Justice Maya Singleton.
The will was penned in 1993 when Justice was Singleton’s only child.
Now he has six other children – Maasai, Hadar, Cleopatra, Selenesol, Isis, and Seven – who may have rights to his inheritance because they were not specifically excluded from the will, according to TMZ.
The $3.8 million estate likely doesn’t reflect Singleton’s full assets as he reports claim the director was worth $35million at the time of his death.
Under California law the six other Singleton children could have a strong case to divide the $3.8 million estate equally among themselves, each taking 1/7 of the inheritance.
There have also been reports that his sister and mother were fighting over his inheritance and legacy in his final months.
He suffered a stroke two weeks ago after returning to the U.S. from a trip in Costa Rica and was subsequently placed in a medically induced coma.
His mother Shelia Ward filed an application to establish a temporary conservatorship for his estate in April.
In court documents she wrote that her son was ‘hospitalized in a coma and is unable to provide for his personal needs.’
She added Singleton was involved in ‘several business projects and was prepared to sign a lucrative settlement agreement’ at the end of the month, according to documents seen by People Magazine.
However, Singleton’s 21-year-old daughter, Cleopatra, public disputed Ward’s description of her father’s condition, insisting it wasn’t as severe as her grandmother had claimed.
‘My father is not in a coma… My dad is progressing every day… My father is breathing on his own. He is only medically sedated to keep his blood pressure low and allow the vessels in his brain to heal.’
Cleopatra also added that her father’s state was yet to be diagnosed by doctors, and she called her grandmother’s motives for wanting to take control of Singleton’s fortune ‘disturbing’.
‘My grandmother’s intentions toward my father and his children are disturbing,’ Cleopatra said. ‘She cannot be [a] conservator of his person or his estate.’
Cleopatra allegedly claimed that Shelia was trying to deny Singleton’s children access to his money.
Singleton left a historic mark in Hollywood as the first African-American man to be nominated for a Best Directing Oscar for his 1991 film Boyz n the Hood.
His family made the gut-wrenching announcement that they pulled the plug on Monday.
‘It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton passed away today due to complications from a stroke he suffered last Wednesday.
‘John Singleton was a prolific, groundbreaking director who changed the game and opened doors in Hollywood, a world that was just a few miles away, yet worlds away, from the neighborhood in which he grew up/
‘In his private life, John was a loving and supporting father, son, brother and friend who believed in higher education, black culture, old school music and the power of film. John’s confidence in his place in Hollywood was only matched for his passion for the sea. John kayaked in Marina Del Rey every morning. His greatest joy, when not on set, was sailing on his boat, J’s Dream, up and down the Pacific Coast,’ the statement continued.
