YouTube Music Revamps Offline Listening With Automatic ‘Smart Downloads’

The platform will now automatically download up to 500 songs that premium subscribers have “liked.”

YouTube Music will now automatically download up to 500 songs for premium users through a new “Smart Downloads” feature on the Android app — making those files available for listening anywhere, anytime, even without a data connection.

Premium subscribers can already download tracks, albums and entire playlists for offline playback. But with the revamp, YouTube Music aims to do the work for you.

Smart Downloads will draw the first 100 tracks from the preexisting Offline Mix-tape, a playlist based on your listening history. From there, it will fill up on downloads from your liked songs, favourite playlists and frequented albums.

The automatic downloads could encompass Offline Mix tape along with Pop Hot-list and Summer 2019 playlists plus a Kacey Musgraves album, for example, according to a representative for YouTube. Users are free to limit the number of downloads, and the process happens overnight, while connected to Wi-Fi.

In April, Google revealed plans to fold Google Play into YouTube Music, part of an overall relaunch for the streaming service.

And as music videos and other music content continues to dominate views on the platform, YouTube served as Coachella’s official live-stream and playlist partner in April, with plans to live-stream Lollapalooza in August.

The platform is also teaming with Universal Music Group to remaster more than 1,000 iconic music videos.
