For the 2016 Grammys, Zendaya went with a mullet inspired by David Bowie’s.
The actress made a splash on the red carpet in February 2016 when she wore a black Dsquared2 suit, white blouse, and heavy silver jewelry to embody the late British musician’s androgynous aesthetic.
In an interview with InStyle magazine for the November 2021 issue, Zendaya reflected on the look and said it was a significant turning point in her style growth.
“Back then, I was teased for having a mullet, but now youngsters adore mullets,” she explained.
“I’m overjoyed with my David Bowie mullet,” she exclaimed.
Mullet haircuts have recently been worn by celebrities including Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato.
Additionally, Zendaya revealed that she and stylist Law Roach develop a “character” for every red carpet look they put together during their conversation.
“Red carpets, in my opinion, have their own cast of characters and stories to tell. For each look, we craft a little narrative. You just put on this wig or anything and you’re ready to go. It’s kind of like an extension of my acting career” she revealed.
“The emotions that clothes can evoke allow me to inhabit several personas, whether they be extensions of myself or alter egos. The only way I’m able to meet all of these women is through clothing.”
